He took up painting as a career around 1885 and he exhibited at the RBA (1885-1888) and the New English Art Club (1888-1909). He also exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Grosvenor Gallery. His works are represented in the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Collection, Windsor, and the Museum of London. He has written a number of books on painting, including Painting Methods of the Impressionists (1976). Born in Munich into a family of professional artists (his father was Oswald Adalbert Sickert, a Danish landscape artist), Walter later moved to London in 1868. After first intending to be an actor, he studied at the Slade (1881) for some months, but after meeting JM WHISTLER there, he left to become his pupil and studio assistant, helping with his printmaking. Cornwall also contends that Sickert was responsible for writing most of the Jack the Ripper correspondence, and frequently uses statements made in those letters to strengthen her case against him.
